Mark Zuckerberg: A Biography

Early Life

Mark Elliot Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984, in White Plains, New York. He grew up in nearby Dobbs Ferry. His father, Edward Zuckerberg, is a dentist, and his mother, Karen, is a psychiatrist. Mark has three sisters: Randi, Donna, and Arielle. From an early age, Zuckerberg showed a keen interest in computers and programming. By the time he was in middle school, he had already started writing software programs.

Education

Zuckerberg attended Ardsley High School before transferring to Phillips Exeter Academy, a private preparatory school in New Hampshire. There, he excelled in classics and sciences and won prizes in astronomy, mathematics, and physics. He also attended the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth summer camp. While at Exeter, Zuckerberg built a music player called the Synapse Media Player, which used machine learning to learn users' listening habits. Several companies, including AOL and Microsoft, expressed interest in buying the software and hiring him, but Zuckerberg declined the offers.

In 2002, Zuckerberg enrolled at Harvard University, where he studied psychology and computer science. He was known for developing a number of social programs, including CourseMatch, which helped students select classes based on the course selections of other users, and Facemash, a site that allowed students to judge the attractiveness of their peers. Facemash was shut down by the university, but it laid the groundwork for his later success.

Founding Facebook

In 2004, during his sophomore year at Harvard, Zuckerberg launched "TheFacebook," originally located at thefacebook.com. It was a social networking website that allowed Harvard students to connect with each other. Within 24 hours, over 1,200 students had signed up, and Zuckerberg and his friends (Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, and Chris Hughes) decided to expand the site to other universities. The site quickly grew in popularity, and Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard to focus on it full-time, moving the company to Palo Alto, California.

In 2005, the company dropped "The" from its name to become simply "Facebook" and continued to expand. It opened to high school students and then to anyone over the age of 13 with a valid email address. Facebook's growth was rapid, and by 2008, it had surpassed MySpace to become the most popular social networking site in the world.

Business Success

Under Zuckerberg's leadership, Facebook went public in May 2012, with an initial public offering (IPO) that raised $16 billion, making it one of the largest tech IPOs in history. The company continued to grow, acquiring Instagram in 2012, WhatsApp in 2014, and Oculus VR in 2014, among other companies. Zuckerberg's vision for Facebook expanded beyond social networking to include virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and internet connectivity for underserved regions.

Philanthropy and Personal Life

In December 2015, Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, announced the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, pledging to give away 99% of their Facebook shares over their lifetimes to causes related to education, health, scientific research, and energy. The couple has two daughters, Maxima and August.

Legacy and Influence

Mark Zuckerberg is widely recognized as one of the most influential tech entrepreneurs of the 21st century. His work has significantly shaped the way people interact online, transforming social media into an integral part of daily life. Despite controversies related to privacy, data security, and the spread of misinformation on Facebook, Zuckerberg continues to lead the company with a focus on innovation and expansion into new areas of technology.
